Things to do in Southampton

Southampton is filled with many fabulous attractions including amazing and immersive museums such as the SeaCity Museum, which tells the story of Britain’s maritime history.
It’s also here where you can find the Titanic Story exhibition which highlights Southampton’s connection to the vessel which began its ill-fated journey from the city’s port.

Southampton also features the Titanic Trail which takes you to all of the sites around the city with a connection to the ship. Visit the Titanic Engineers’ Memorial in East Park and the Titanic Musicians’ Memorial.

From sea to sky, you need to plan a visit to Solent Sky. Filled with an amazing collection of photographs, models and a few planes, you can trace back Southampton’s aviation history here.
Did you know, for example, the prototype of the first Spitfire actually took to the air from Southampton? Become a tourist in your own city and discover these incredible locations.

● Ocean Village – Enjoy views of the marina and order great food and drink from the many bars and restaurants in this area.
● Southampton Art Gallery – Spend an afternoon browsing the incredible artwork here with over 5,000 pieces on display.
● Stop by Southampton Water Activities Centre – Try your hand at everything from sailing to paddleboarding from this location, with instructors on hand to help.
● Alpine Sports Centre – There are no mountains in Southampton but you can still enjoy some skiing at this winter sports centre.

Events in Southampton

Southampton is a thriving, bustling city with annual events taking place across the city. The Cultural Quarter has some of the best event spaces including the O2 Guildhall Southampton, the Nuffield Southampton Theatre City and the Southampton City Art Gallery.

So, if you love live music, interesting talks, seeing the latest films, watching stand-up comedy or browsing incredible new art, you can enjoy it all here.

Southampton is also famous for its huge Christmas festival with a German market serving up plenty of beer and sausages.

The city is also home to a number of festivals throughout the year including the Southampton Mela Festival and a two-day family festival called Common People – which takes place on Southampton Common.

You also won’t want to miss the Southampton Boat Show which attracts visitors from around the world.
Football fans can also enjoy Southampton Football Club’s stadium which is a short walk away from the centre.

Shopping in Southampton

There are over 400 shops in the city, making it the perfect place to indulge in a little retail therapy.
As well as the high street you can also take a trip to Westquay Shopping Centre which has around 130 shops and some great places to grab a bite to eat. You also have West Quay Retail Park for even more shopping fun.

Where to eat in Southampton

If you love eating out, you’re spoilt for choice here. If you love nothing more than grabbing a slice of pizza, Paddle and Peel is the place to be. Fancy a steak night? Carnicero Steakhouse is a favourite. But whether you want Thai cuisine, classic British dishes or Italian, you can find it all here.

Nightlife in Southampton

Whether it’s late-night shopping, grabbing a midnight snack or enjoying a cocktail and having a dance, you can do it all while living in Southampton.

Westquay Shopping Centre offers late-night shopping Monday to Saturday, 9am-8pm on weekdays and 9am-7pm on Saturday.

For a dance and a drink, we recommend paying a visit to the laidback bar The Social, or if you want to head to a nightclub, Orange Rooms is a popular go-to.

Getting around in Southampton

Southampton has some great connections. The road network is excellent and public transport is available across the city. Not to mention that it has one of the busiest cruise ports in the world – perfect if you want to go on a cruise holiday. It’s also very accessible for pedestrians if you fancy exploring the city on foot or cycle.

● By road – The city has two major links from the M3 and M27 motorways and there are 42 car parks across Southampton.
● Taxi – You can find taxi ranks at Southampton Central railway station, near Westquay Shopping Centre, the High Street and Southampton Airport Parkway station.
● Bus – All towns and suburbs are connected by the city’s seven main bus operators.
● Train – There are two main train stations in Southampton: Airport Parkway and Southampton Central. If you want to venture out of the city, the fast train can get to London Waterloo in 1 hour 20 minutes.
